Maha Shivratri at day after. It is a very important ritual for Shaiva worshippers as well as Hindus. According to Hindu belief, this Maha Shivratri, or Harratri, is organised every year on the Chaturdashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Magha. It is the union festival of Shiva and Parvati. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva is the symbol of pralaya, or destruction. On the other hand, Goddess Parvati is the goddess of love, beauty, and creation. According to Hindu belief, Shiva and Shakti come together on this tithi of the month of Magha.

And on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, 108 Shiva temples in Burdwan have been decorated. The movement of people has already started, and last-minute preparations are going on. Although 108 in name, there are actually 109 temples. There are 108 Shiva temples spread out like a rosary, and there is one at a distance. Pilgrims throng this century-old temple in the Nawabhat area of Burdwan city throughout the year. Many people come from far and wide for this unique architectural style.

230 years ago today, this unique architecture was built by the then Maharani Vishnukumari Devi of Burdwan at a cost of lakhs of rupees. The construction of this temple started in 1788 and was completed in 1790. On the occasion of Maha Shivratri, many devotees from the district and even from other states gather on the premises of 108 Shiva temples. On this day, the devotees worship Mahadev by fasting with milk, Ganges water, ghee, honey, akanda, dhutra, Neelkantha flowers, Bel leaves, etc. Apart from this, a seven-day-long fair is organised in the Nawabhat area around Maha Shivratri.
